Denver SEO | Search Engine Optimization in CO

What is SEO?
SEO is an acronym for Search Engine Optimization. That means how well your website is optimized to rank in the Google SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages). I only mention Google as it is the largest search engine and recently bought the 2nd largest search engine YouTube. To put it into perspective, YouTube is bigger that all the rest combined, including Bing, Yahoo, and Ask.com. 90% of searches will be done on Google. SEO also applies to videos, press releases, blog posts, articles, social media sites, local directories, and basically anything that you want to rank higher in search engine results.
Google uses an unknown algorithm to rank content. An algorithm is loosely defined as a system of organization or ranking. There are over 200 separate factors that decide how well you rank in the Google algorithm. Below we will focus on the most important aspects.
On Page SEO
On page search engine optimization is what happens within your website, blog post, or video description. For example, the total number of words on a blog post is a factor in on page optimization. A minimum of 500 words should be used, and 800 – 1200 is a better range. Keyword density is also important, which is the ratio of keyword to total words. The best keyword density will depend on factors such as niche, but 1 – 1.5% is a good starting place. Before Google Panda and Penguin (algorithm updates), keyword stuffing was an easy way to rank content, now it will get you penalized.
There are many other on page factors, especially with video marketing, but those are the basics.
Off Page Search Engine Optimization
Off Page SEO is just as the name implies, factors outside of your video, website, or content that effect your rank in the search engines.
The biggest off page factor that will be discussed here is backlinks. The more backlinks you have, the more relevant they are, and the more diverse they are, the more they will boost your rank in the search engines.
A backlink can be best summed up as a vote from another site to yours. For example, when someone likes this video and thinks it is valuable, they may post a link to it on their website. People can click that link on their site and that is a backlink. It shows Google you are in effect popular. The best types of backlinks are ones with high PR (Page Rank) and Authority links (see my other trainings). Be careful, if you get artificial backlinks or ones Google has marked as spam, you can take a big drop in the rankings.
Social Media Signals
Social media is becoming a more and more important factor in SEO. Google will boost you in its SERPs if you have lots of Facebook likes, shares, and comments as well as Twitter tweets, Google+ G+s and other social signals. If people are interacting and sharing you social media posts, Google knows that are relevant , good material.
Keep your eyes on Google+, Google’s own social media site who is silently (or not so silently anymore) taking over Facebook. Yes, fellow marketer, there is a long way to go, but in my professional opinion this will happen in the next 5 years. This means you should be focusing on G+s (Google equivalent of likes), and if you haven’t set up your businesses Google plus page, do it now. This alone will separate you from 90% of the competition.
Other Factors That Influence SEO
Good content: There is a saying… “Content is King”. No matter what you do with backlinks, social media signal, and keyword density, the most important factor is content. In all my testing this overrides any other single factor. If you align with Google’s intention of the best user experience you will rank. Basically, Google wants someone that types in Denver SEO, to find a good, informative video such as this one. If you manipulate the rankings and somehow get one of the top positions, you will fall from the top quickly. The algorithm analyzes how long a searcher stays on your content, and if a lot of users bounce off quickly, it is an indication that your content was not what the user was looking for.
Consistency: Google loves consistent, well written content. Just by putting up a blog post on your website on a weekly basis shows that your content has a good chance of being relevant.
Google Authorship: Have you seen the little thumbnail picture next to some peoples websites in Google search results? This is Google’s way of showing authorship and is done by connecting your Google + page to your website. They say that this is not a factor in SEO, but I believe otherwise. If anything, if your picture is next to your website in the SERPs, you may get more clicks than the website without a picture above it. Social proof is a major factor in SEO, so with Authorship, it shows the number of G+ followers you have.
The First Page of Google – Why You Want to Be There
If you aren’t on the first page of Google, you better be doing everything you can to get there. Most studies show that 90% or more of all clicks for any given keyword happen on the first page of Google. In fact, up to 65% or more of clicks don’t go past the first 5 spots on the first page.
Watch for the search engines to become more and more aligned with social signals. Make sure you are getting your website and videos on all the major social media sites (Google+, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, LinkedIn) and at least 10 of the most important local search directories in the Denver SEO area.
Have some knowledge of what your Denver SEO consultant is doing with your website, social media sites, videos, and press releases. If they are practicing methods that go against Google’s User Guidelines, your site can take a huge drop in the rankings. Worse yet, it can be deindexed, which means it no longer appears anywhere in the search results.
